BMW's first modern hatchback, and the purists hated it before they drove it. The E87 used a longitudinally-mounted inline-six in a compact body, rear-wheel drive, and 50:50 weight distribution. Read that again. A hot hatch layout from a company that refused to follow the formula. The 130i made 265 hp from the N52, and it could embarrass cars twice its price on a back road. The interior was typically BMW for the era. Solid, driver-focused, slightly austere. The iDrive was still finding its feet. None of that mattered when the road got twisty. Understeer? Barely. The E87 rotated on throttle like a proper sports car. BMW never made another RWD hatchback. They probably should have.
