BMW killed rear-wheel drive in the 1 Series and the purists wrote the obituary before driving it. The F40 went front-wheel drive on the FAAR platform, with xDrive AWD on the M135i. The B48 four-cylinder in the 128ti made 262 hp and was the driver's pick, a hot hatch that BMW finally admitted was a hot hatch. The M135i got 302 hp and hit 60 in 4.7 seconds. Quick, capable, and totally different from the E87. The interior jumped forward with the latest iDrive, digital gauges, and materials that felt current. The driving experience was good. Not E87-good in terms of character, but more refined, faster, and better equipped. The F40 was BMW accepting that the 1 Series needed to compete with the Golf GTI and A-Class AMG rather than pretending it was something different.
