About the X5 E70
BMW made the X5 bigger and better with the E70 and settled into what the X5 would be going forward. The N55 turbo six in the 35i made 300 hp, responsive and refined. The twin-turbo 4.4 V8 in the 50i hit 400 hp. The X5 M got the S63 at 555 hp, a genuine performance SUV that could run with sports cars and still carry five people and luggage. The interior jumped two generations in quality over the E53 with better materials, more tech, and iDrive that was maturing into something usable. xDrive AWD was standard and the system was calibrated well enough that the E70 still felt rear-biased in normal driving. The ride was comfortable, the highway manners were excellent, and the E70 established that the X5 was BMW's real volume play.
