About the Silverado GMT800

First generation of the modern Silverado nameplate, and GM was fighting Ford for every sale. The GMT800 got a new Vortec V8 family, the 5.3 making 285 hp and the 6.0 pushing 300 hp for heavy-duty work. The frame was hydroformed for the first time, stiffer and lighter than the outgoing C/K. Extended cab and crew cab options expanded the lineup into family-truck territory. Ride quality was truck-firm, no pretense of being a luxury vehicle. The interior was functional, plasticky, and perfectly fine for anyone who used a truck as a truck. Four-wheel drive with the NP246 transfer case was proven and reliable. These are still everywhere because they refuse to quit and parts cost nothing.
