About the Explorer 3rd Gen

The third-gen Explorer arrived in 2002 and Ford moved it to a fully independent rear suspension for the first time. The 4.0 SOHC V6 made 210 hp and was the volume engine. The 4.6 V8 pushed to 239 hp and gave the Explorer genuine overtaking power. The body got bigger, the interior got softer, and the ride quality improved significantly over the second gen. AdvanceTrac stability control became available and Ford pushed it hard after the rollover controversies. The interior was comfortable with available leather and a decent sound system. The Explorer Sport Trac pickup variant used the same platform and found a niche audience. The third gen sold well because it was the right size for American families and the V8 option gave it towing credibility that the V6-only competitors lacked.
