About the Accord 1st Gen
Honda launched the Accord in 1976 as a compact hatchback that did everything a little better than anyone expected. The 1.6-liter CVCC engine made 68 hp and met US emissions standards without a catalytic converter, which was a genuine engineering achievement. Five-speed manual, front-wheel drive, and a build quality that embarrassed domestic competition. The interior was tight but well-assembled, with switchgear that clicked with precision. Honda sold the Accord as basic transportation but built it like they were proving a point. The hatchback body was practical, the driving experience was engaging for the class, and the reliability became the foundation of Honda's American reputation. Every Accord since has been an evolution of what the first gen established: build it right, price it fair, let the product speak.
