About the Elantra AD
Sixth-gen Elantra, and Hyundai went conservative after the aggressive fifth gen. The AD got clean, horizontal lines and a cabin that prioritized width and visibility. The 2.0-liter Nu GDI made 147 hp, adequate and efficient. The 1.4 turbo paired with a seven-speed DCT offered more character. The Sport variant got a 1.6 turbo at 201 hp with an available six-speed manual and independent rear suspension that the base car didn't get. That was the one worth driving. The interior jumped in quality with an available 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and materials that held up well. The AD Elantra won North American Car of the Year because it delivered genuine value without feeling cheap. Hyundai was learning that competitive didn't have to mean compromise.
