About the Elantra J2

The J2 Elantra was Hyundais first serious attempt at a global compact sedan. Between 1995 and 2000, it offered more standard equipment than the Civic or Corolla at a lower price — the classic Korean value proposition before anyone took it seriously. The 1.8 Beta engine was adequate, the ride was comfortable, and the warranty was the real selling point. Build quality was inconsistent, and that inconsistency cost Hyundai the trust it was trying to build. But every J2 that lasted taught a buyer to come back for another.
