The NC grew in every dimension and gained the 2.0-liter MZR engine rated 170 hp at launch and 166 hp by 2008 (160 PS in Europe). More power than any previous Miata, but also more weight — the NC crossed the 1,100 kg barrier and felt it. The power-retractable hardtop was a clever party trick that made year-round ownership practical. The six-speed was excellent. The chassis was capable. But the NC lacked the rawness that made the NA and NB feel special.
