The ND was Mazda's apology for the NC's weight gain. A new SkyActiv platform dropped the curb weight back below a tonne. The 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G made 181 hp in the updated ND2 form, with a redline at 7,500 RPM. The chassis was the lightest and stiffest Miata since the NA, and it showed in every turn. The ND brought the Miata back to its roots: light, responsive, communicative, and sized like a sports car rather than a grand tourer. The RF variant added a power-retractable fastback hardtop that made it the most beautiful Miata ever made. The ND proves that Mazda never lost the plot — they just took a detour with the NC.
