About the A-Class W176
Mercedes made a hatchback and hoped the badge would carry it. The W176 A-Class arrived in 2012 as a front-drive compact, replacing the quirky tall-boy original with something that looked like a shrunk CLS. The 2.0-liter turbo in the A 250 made 208 hp and moved well enough. The A 45 AMG was the headline. 360 hp from a 2.0 turbo, the most powerful production four-cylinder at the time, with 4MATIC AWD and a dual-clutch gearbox. It was fast and loud and Mercedes sold every one they could build. Interior quality was a mixed bag. The design looked good in photos but some materials felt cheap for the badge. The infotainment was a generation behind the competition. The W176 got Mercedes into the compact game. The W177 made them competitive.
