The W177 killed the quirky hatchback Mercedes used to make and replaced it with something slick, digital, and dangerously close to an S-Class inside. MBUX debuted here before the flagships got it. Twin-screen dash, turbulent air vents, ambient lighting in 64 colors. The 2.0-liter turbo four in the A 250 made 221 hp and paired with a 7-speed DCT that shifted faster than most people blink. AMG took the same platform and gave it 416 hp, torque vectoring AWD, and a lap record at the Nürburgring for front-driven cars. A front-driver holding that record tells you everything. Build quality took a step back from W176 in some areas, and the touchpad controls frustrated more people than Mercedes will ever admit. But as a tech showcase in a compact body, nothing else came close.
