About the GLE W164
Mercedes fixed the W163's quality problems and the W164 ML-Class was the result. The M272 3.5 V6 in the ML 350 made 268 hp, the M273 V8 in the ML 500 hit 382 hp, and the AMG ML 63 got the M156 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 at 503 hp. A naturally aspirated AMG V8 in an SUV. That engine alone makes the W164 worth remembering. Build quality jumped significantly over the W163. Panel gaps tightened, interior materials improved, and the electrical system stopped being a constant source of frustration. The air suspension on higher trims delivered genuine comfort. AIRMATIC leveled the ride regardless of load. The W164 was Mercedes getting the ML right after a rough start. It sold well because it finally matched the badge's promise.
