The 500E was hand-built at Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory — each car shipped to Porsche as a bare shell, widened, lowered, fitted with the 5.0-liter V8, and sent back to Mercedes for final assembly. 326 hp in a body that looked almost identical to a standard W124 sedan. The fenders were subtly wider. The ride height was 23mm lower. The exhaust note was the only giveaway at idle. This was the original sleeper sedan — an E-Class that could embarrass M5s at traffic lights while looking like a taxi. Only 10,479 built.
