About the Hilux N20
The N20 Hilux ran from 1972 to 1978 and was the truck that made Toyota a global player in pickups. The 18R 2.0-liter engine made 97 hp, enough to haul reasonable loads without straining. Four-speed manual, leaf springs, solid axles. The formula was identical to the N10 because the formula worked. The cabin got a little wider, the bed got a little longer, and Toyota added creature comforts like a proper heater and an AM radio. The N20 was the first Hilux that felt like it was designed for markets outside Japan. Longer wheelbase variants appeared for commercial use. These trucks showed up in every developing economy because they were cheap to buy, cheaper to run, and they refused to break down when maintenance was inconsistent.
