About the Hilux N50

The N50 Hilux covered 1978 to 1983 and this is the truck that built Toyota's indestructible reputation. The 20R and 22R four-cylinders were so simple and durable that they became the default engine for half the planet's working vehicles. Solid axles front and rear in 4WD models, leaf springs everywhere, a cabin that offered a bench seat and ventilation and not much else. The N50 was the Hilux that Top Gear tried to kill and couldn't. Driven into a tree, parked in the ocean, set on fire, dropped from a building. Still started. The extended cab arrived in this generation and added token rear seats. These trucks are still running in every developing nation because there's nothing on them complicated enough to break permanently.
