The 3S-GTE turbo four in the W20 was a weapon. 245 hp and 304 Nm in the later revisions, delivered through a CT20b turbo with enough midrange punch to pin you to the seat. This was the engine that gave the MR2 its reputation — both the good part (genuinely fast, 0-100 in 5.6 seconds, could embarrass a 964 Carrera) and the complicated part (all that power, mid-engine, short wheelbase, rear-wheel drive). The Rev3 cars from 1993 got revised suspension geometry that tamed the snap oversteer without killing the character. If you know to look for a Rev3 or later, you get the speed without the drama.
