The US-market 5S-FE variant was the W20 for buyers who wanted the mid-engine experience without the turbo insurance premiums. 135 hp from 2.2 liters — decidedly unhurried — but the torquier delivery suited the car's GT personality when equipped with the optional automatic. This was the MR2 as a cruiser, not a canyon carver. Toyota sold plenty of them. The aftermarket swapped most of them to 3S-GTE turbos eventually.
