About the MR2 1.8 SMT (138 Hp) RWD
The sequential manual transmission was Toyota's attempt at bringing paddle-shift technology to an affordable sports car. In theory, clutchless shifts at the pull of a lever. In practice, a gearbox that thought about each shift for slightly too long and took some of the immediacy out of the W30 experience. The SMT was more interesting as a technology preview than as a driving tool — a glimpse at where manual transmissions were heading, even if the execution hadn't caught up to the idea. Most W30 buyers who cared about driving chose the five-speed.
