Toyota made the RAV4 bigger for the second generation and the compact crossover started growing into the family SUV it would eventually become. The 1AZ-FE 2.0-liter made 148 hp, adequate for a vehicle that still weighed under 1,400 kg. The three-door stayed for buyers who wanted the funky original vibe. Five-door became the volume seller because practicality wins. AWD used a center viscous coupling that worked in snow and rain without demanding attention. The interior was more refined than the XA10, with better sound insulation and softer materials. The spare tire stayed on the tailgate. The XA20 RAV4 was the generation that transitioned from lifestyle vehicle to practical family transport. Toyota read the market correctly and followed the money.
