Toyota made the RAV4 the best-selling non-truck in America and the XA50 is why. TNGA-K platform underneath, 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine making 203 hp, and a hybrid that combined for 219 hp with 40 mpg. The Prime plug-in pushed to 302 hp combined and could do 42 miles on battery alone. Faster than a V6 Camry on electricity. The chassis was competent in a way previous RAV4s never bothered with. Multi-link rear, decent body control, steering that communicated enough. The TRD Off-Road trim got Falken all-terrain tires and looked the part. Inside, it was Toyota-functional. Not exciting, not bad, just there. The XA50 sold over 400,000 units a year because it did exactly what families needed without drama or apology.
