About the Golf GTI Mk2

The Mk2 GTI got bigger and then found the power to carry it. It arrived in 1984 with the Mk1's 112 PS 1.8, 100 kg more weight and 14 cm more length: a proper family car with a red line around the grille. Catalyst versions lost 5 PS. The answer came in 1986: the 16V, twin cams and 139 PS without a catalyst, 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and 208 km/h. In 1990 the G60 added a G-Lader scroll supercharger for 160 PS and made ABS standard on a GTI for the first time. US buyers got 100 hp in 1985 and 123 hp from the 16V in 1987. The GTI passed a million units in November 1990, and 628,000 of them were Mk2s.
