About the Golf GTI Mk3

The Mk3 GTI is the one that made fans ask for more. It launched in November 1991 with a 2.0 eight-valve making 115 PS, weighed 1,035 kg and took 10.1 seconds to reach 100 km/h, slower on paper than the 16V it replaced. Volkswagen listened: from January 1993 a 150 PS 16V ran to 215 km/h. In 1996 a 110 PS TDI made it the first diesel GTI, and the '20 Years' edition, with chequered seats and a golf-ball knob, became the first anniversary GTI. The US skipped the 16V and from 1995 sold the GTI VR6, a 2.8 six with 172 hp. Hagerty put the 1995-1998 GTI VR6 on its 2026 Bull Market list. 327,000 Mk3 GTIs were built.
