The Mk1 Golf didn't just replace the Beetle — it replaced the entire idea of what a Volkswagen could be. Giugiaro's razor-sharp design, front-wheel drive, and a water-cooled engine moved VW from the past into the future overnight. The GTI variant created the hot hatch segment entirely by accident. Diesel versions proved small cars could be efficient without being miserable. The Mk1 was the template: practical, fun, and engineered with more care than the price suggested.
