About the Golf Mk4

The Mk4 is the Golf that wanted to be an Audi, and mostly got there. Hartmut Warkuß's team gave it minimal panel gaps, clear-glass headlights, a fully galvanised body and a thick C-pillar that tied it back to 1974, and the cabin moved the class upmarket. ESP arrived in 1998 and was standard by 1999, the same period Haldex-based 4MOTION replaced syncro. So the 2002 R32, with a 3.2 VR6 and 241 PS, wasn't the first four-wheel-drive Golf. It was the best one yet, and in 2003 it became the first Volkswagen offered with DSG. Hagerty now calls the R32 a bona fide collector car. 4.9 million Mk4s were built.
