About the Golf Mk4

The Mk4 Golf was the generation that wanted to be an Audi. Build quality went up. Weight went up. The interior felt expensive. The driving experience got softer. The VR6 had a soundtrack that justified the extra mass, and the R32 — the first all-wheel-drive Golf — became an instant collector's car. But the GTI lost its edge. The 1.8T was tuneable but needed help to feel exciting. The Mk4 was the Golf that proved Volkswagen could build a premium hatchback. Whether they should have is a different question.
