The Mk5 brought the Golf back to life. After the overweight, under-inspired Mk4, Volkswagen returned with a new platform, a turbocharged engine that responded to tunes like nothing else on the market, and a chassis that remembered what made the GTI badge matter. The EA113 2.0T became the tuner's engine of choice — stage 1 maps turned 200 hp into 260 overnight. The DSG dual-clutch was new and fast. The plaid seats were back. The Mk5 didn't reinvent the GTI. It reminded everyone why it existed.
