About the Jetta Mk5
VW moved the Jetta to the PQ35 platform shared with the Golf Mk5, and the improvement was immediate. The 2.0T FSI made 200 hp with direct injection, torquey and responsive in a way the Mk4's 1.8T never managed. The 2.5-liter five-cylinder was the US-market oddity, 150 hp and a sound that charmed some and confused others. GLI trim got the good stuff: sport suspension, bigger brakes, a six-speed manual, and an interior that felt more Audi than VW. Build quality tightened up from the Mk4. Panel gaps shrank, materials improved, and the DSG dual-clutch gearbox arrived as an option that shifted faster than you could. The Mk5 Jetta was the one that convinced Americans that VW sedans were worth taking seriously again.
