The S14 was never supposed to be a road engine. BMW's motorsport division took the M10 block, stretched it to 2.3 liters, gave it four individual throttle bodies, and told the homologation department to figure it out. 197 hp doesn't sound like much now. In 1986, it was enough to dominate touring car racing on three continents. The E30 M3 didn't need electronic aids or forced induction. It needed a driver who understood weight transfer. At 1,200 kg with rear-wheel drive and a dog-leg first gear, this was a race car that happened to have door handles.
