About the 3 Series

The 3 Series is the car that defined what a sports sedan should be. Everything else is a response to it. Since 1975, BMW's mid-size sedan has been the benchmark — the car that automotive journalists reach for when they need a reference point for steering feel, chassis balance, or the phrase "driver's car." The E30 M3 dominated touring cars. The E36 brought the formula to the masses. The E46 perfected it so thoroughly that two decades later, enthusiasts still call it the best all-around BMW ever built. The F30 added turbos and lost some of the hydraulic steering feel that made the E46 a religion. The G20 added screens and driving modes and all the things that sell cars in 2024 but don't necessarily make them better to drive.
