About the 3 Series F30
BMW went turbocharged across the range and the F30 was the 3 Series that had to make everyone okay with it. The N20 four-cylinder in the 328i made 240 hp and more torque than the outgoing N52 six. Faster on paper, different in character. The N55 six in the 335i kept the traditional formula alive at 300 hp. Electric steering arrived and the forums erupted. Less feedback, more assist, the death of the 3 Series as a driver's car depending on who you asked. It wasn't that bad. It just wasn't the E46. The M Sport package looked right, the interior quality improved over the E90, and the 8-speed ZF auto shifted better than most manuals. The F30 sold in enormous numbers because it was a very good car that wasn't allowed to just be good.
