BMW went bigger kidney grilles and the internet lost its mind, but the G20 3 Series underneath was the best-driving one since the E46. The B48 four-cylinder in the 330i made 255 hp with a 48V mild-hybrid assist that filled in the torque gaps. The B58 six in the M340i hit 382 hp and could embarrass the previous-gen M3 in a straight line. The chassis was stiff, the steering was improved over the F30, and the optional adaptive dampers finally gave the 3 Series the compliance it had been missing. iDrive 7 worked well, the interior was a clear class above, and the digital gauges didn't ruin the driving experience. The M3 got a polarizing face. The regular G20 just got on with being excellent.
