The S54 inline-six is the best naturally aspirated engine BMW ever bolted into a 3 Series. 343 hp at 7,900 rpm from 3.2 liters — no forced induction, no electric assist. Just six cylinders and an 8,000 rpm redline that rewarded every downshift. The E46 M3 balanced refinement and rawness in a way BMW has never replicated since. It could cruise the Autobahn all day and carve through mountain roads all night. The SMG was questionable. The six-speed manual was not.
