About the 5 Series E28

The E28 was the second-gen 5 Series and the first one to get an M badge. The M535i started things, 218 hp from the M30 inline-six with a dog-leg five-speed. Then the M5 arrived in 1985 with the S38 engine making 282 hp, hand-built by BMW Motorsport from the M1 supercar's block. A four-door sedan with a race-derived engine, in 1985. The standard cars were excellent too. The 528e prioritized torque and fuel economy, the 535i was the fast tourer, and even the four-cylinder 520i had a chassis that rewarded clean driving. Recaro seats in the sport package, a thin-rimmed steering wheel, and an interior that smelled like Germany. The E28 is the 5 Series that proved the concept before the E34 perfected it.
