About the F-150 7th Gen
The seventh-gen F-150 ran from 1980 to 1986 and was the truck that carried Ford through the recession. The 300 inline-six was the fleet engine, torquey and unkillable. The 351 Windsor V8 made 165 hp and handled towing without drama. The 460 big-block was available for heavy hauling. Twin I-beam front suspension gave better ride quality than a solid axle without sacrificing capability. The interior was basic in the way trucks were supposed to be. Vinyl bench, column shifter, rubber floor mats. Ford offered the Lariat trim with carpet and chrome for buyers who wanted something nicer. The seventh gen was the truck that established the F-150 as America's best-selling vehicle, a title it hasn't given up since. The formula was already locked in.
