About the Fiesta Mk5
The Mk5 Fiesta arrived in 2002 and Ford finally gave it a platform that wasn't embarrassing. Shared underpinnings with the Mazda 2 brought a level of chassis competence the Mk4 never had. The Duratec 1.4 and 1.6 were the engine choices, nothing exciting but willing enough. The Zetec-S 1.6 was the sporting pick at 100 hp, which in a car this light felt like enough. The three-door looked right. Compact, purposeful, and parked anywhere. Interior quality was a step up but still budget-tier, with hard plastics that made no apologies. What sold the Mk5 was the price-to-fun ratio. Young drivers bought these because insurance was cheap and the handling was better than any other supermini Ford had built. It wasn't a Mk1 Focus. But it tried.
