About the Civic 1.6 Type R (160 Hp) FWD
The B16B doesn't make sense on paper. 160hp from 1,595cc with no forced induction. Honda's answer was simple: make it rev to 8,400rpm and build every component to survive there. VTEC engagement isn't a gimmick in this engine — it's the entire personality shift. Below the crossover point, you're driving a Civic. Above it, you're driving a Type R. Five-speed close-ratio box, limited-slip diff, 1,050kg. Nothing between you and the mechanical reality of what's happening. This is where the Type R lineage starts. Everything after it — the EP3, the FN2, the FK8, the FL5 — traces back to this formula.
