Hyundai's first real attempt at the European hatchback market, and the FD i30 was more competent than anyone expected. The 2.0-liter Beta engine made 143 hp, the 1.6 CRDi diesel hit 115 hp for the fuel-conscious. The chassis was developed with input from former BMW engineers Hyundai had hired, and it showed. Controlled body movements, decent steering weight, and a ride that balanced comfort and composure. The interior was a clear step up from the Elantra it replaced in some markets, with better materials and a more European layout. Five-year warranty was the safety net that got skeptics into the showroom. The FD i30 didn't win any comparison tests. It didn't lose them badly either. Hyundai was learning to compete, and the FD was the car that proved they were paying attention.
