Hyundai looked at every compact crossover on the market and decided none of them were interesting enough. The NX4 Tucson got a design that split opinions on sight. Parametric grille, hidden daytime running lights that disappear when off, a rear end that looked like nothing else in the segment. Under the skin, the Smartstream 2.5 made 187 hp, and the turbo 1.6 hit 226 hp with the hybrid pushing combined output to 261. N Line tuned the suspension and added visual aggression without the full N treatment. HTRAC AWD was optional and competent. Interior quality jumped hard over the previous gen. Dual curved screens, physical climate controls that doubled as touch buttons. Some of it was gimmicky. Most of it worked. Hyundai stopped chasing and started leading.
