Mercedes went four-cylinder-only for the W206 C-Class and the six-cylinder crowd had to look at the E-Class or aftermarket. The M254 2.0-liter turbo made 255 hp in the C 300 with a 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator. The C 43 AMG got a version with an electric turbo making 402 hp. Four cylinders, 400-plus horsepower. The interior was the star. An 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen running MBUX, ambient lighting, and a cabin that shrunk the gap with the S-Class more than any C-Class before. The digital cockpit was sharp and customizable. Ride quality was refined on the standard suspension, genuinely comfortable on the optional air springs. The W206 was a better luxury car than sports sedan. Mercedes made the choice deliberately and the sales numbers validated it.
