The W463 is the generation that turned the G-Class from a military tool into a status symbol. Mercedes kept the ladder frame, the locking differentials, and the boxy body — then added leather seats, climate control, and engines that had no business being in something with the aerodynamic profile of a wardrobe. The G500 with the 5.0-liter V8 was the gateway drug. The G55 AMG added a supercharger and 507 hp. The G63 AMG went twin-turbo and 571 hp. The G65 AMG put a twin-turbo V12 in a military chassis and charged a quarter million dollars for it. Each variant was more absurd than the last, and each one sold out immediately. Twenty-eight years of production with essentially the same body. The W463 proved that some designs are so right — or so stubbornly loved — that they transcend automotive fashion entirely.
