About the Porsche 911 901/911 (Classic)
The original. Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche designed the body. The air-cooled flat-six sat behind the rear axle. The combination should not have worked — too much weight too far back — but the 911 turned that engineering challenge into a driving experience nothing else could replicate. The early 2.0-liter cars made 130 hp and were light enough to feel fast. The S variant pushed to 180 hp. The 2.2 and 2.4 liter increases added torque without weight. Mechanical fuel injection on the S and E models sharpened throttle response. The Targa introduced the removable roof panel. These early cars are the purest 911s — short wheelbase, light steering, and a rear end that would come around if you lifted off the throttle mid-corner. They demanded respect and rewarded skill in equal measure. Every 911 since has been an attempt to make the formula more accessible without losing this original character.
