PORSCHE 911 991
About the Porsche 911 991
The 991 was the biggest 911 ever, and the first to make every variant turbocharged. The base Carrera went from a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six to a 3.0-liter twin-turbo with the 991.2 facelift — a change that gave it more power and torque while cutting emissions, and simultaneously broke a million enthusiast hearts. The 991 GT3 kept the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six and revved to 9,000 RPM, reminding everyone what a Porsche engine should sound like. The GT3 RS pushed 500 hp. The GT2 RS made 700 hp and held the Nurburgring lap record for production cars. The 991 was more capable than any previous 911 at every level — faster, more comfortable, more technologically advanced. Whether the turbo base cars lost something in the process depends on whether you value throttle response or turbo torque. The GT cars answered that question definitively.
