PORSCHE 911 993
About the Porsche 911 993
The last air-cooled 911, and the one that gets the most reverent whispers at car shows. The 993 refined everything the 964 started and wrapped it in the most beautiful 911 body Porsche had yet designed — wider, lower, with integrated bumpers that finally made the 911 look like a modern car. The 3.6-liter flat-six made 272 hp with VarioRam intake technology. The Turbo went to twin turbos and 408 hp with all-wheel drive — the first 911 Turbo that could be driven fast in the rain without requiring a death wish. The GT2 stripped the all-wheel drive and pushed 450 hp to the rear wheels only, because Porsche's motorsport division has never met a margin of safety it couldn't delete. The 993 is the 911 that air-cooled purists hold up as the pinnacle. It was faster, more refined, and more capable than any air-cooled 911 before it. When Porsche announced the water-cooled 996, the 993 became the end of an era — and its values have climbed ever since.
