About the Impreza GP
Fourth-gen Impreza, and Subaru finally separated the WRX into its own model. The GP hatchback got the FB20 2.0-liter making 148 hp, naturally aspirated, no turbo. The boxer engine sat lower and further back in the chassis than before, which helped handling. CVT was the primary transmission, and Subaru's Lineartronic unit was better than most. The five-speed manual stayed for buyers who cared. Symmetrical AWD as standard, because Subaru. The interior improved over the GE with better materials and a more cohesive design. The GP was the Impreza that accepted its role as a practical, efficient, all-weather commuter instead of pretending it was related to something that won rally stages. Honest positioning for an honest car.
