About the Impreza
The Impreza was never supposed to be famous. It was a compact sedan for Japanese commuters — sensible, affordable, forgettable. Then Subaru went and homologated it for Group A rallying and everything changed. The GC generation turned a nobody into a household name. Hood scoop, gold wheels, 555 livery, Colin McRae sideways through forests at impossible speeds. The GD sharpened everything — bugeye to blobeye to hawkeye, each facelift spawning its own devoted faction. Those first two generations are the ones people tattoo on their arms. And deservedly so. The boxer rumble on cold start. The turbo flutter on lift-off. The way the AWD system just hooks up and goes, regardless of surface, weather, or common sense. Then reality crept in. The GE softened. The GP got a hatchback. The GT went CVT. Each generation moved further from the rally stage and closer to the school run. The sixth gen doesn't even offer a turbo. The Impreza's arc is the most dramatic identity shift in Japanese automotive history. From rally weapon to rental car, with every step documented by a fanbase that never forgave the pivot.
