About the Legacy BC
First-gen Legacy, and Subaru finally had a proper sedan to compete with the Camry and Accord. The BC got the EJ22 flat-four at 130 hp in naturally aspirated form, smooth and willing to rev. The turbo RS made 217 hp and came with AWD and a five-speed manual. That combination didn't exist anywhere else in the early '90s mid-size segment. Subaru set a world speed endurance record with a BC Legacy in 1989 — 100,000 km at an average speed of 138 mph at the Arizona Test Center. Nobody noticed. The car was better than its sales suggested. Comfortable, grippy in bad weather, and more engaging to drive than anything in its class. The Legacy gave Subaru credibility as a sedan maker. Everything after it built on these bones.
