About the Legacy
The Legacy is the car Subaru built when they wanted to prove they could compete with the Camry and Accord — and the one enthusiasts remember for the turbocharged versions that nobody asked for. Launched in 1989, the Legacy was Subaru's first serious mid-size sedan. The first generation set a world speed record for a production car under 2.0L at the Bonneville Salt Flats — 138 mph from a flat-four turbo, which told you everything about Subaru's engineering priorities. The third-generation Legacy GT, with its 2.5L turbo boxer producing 250 hp, was the sweet spot — a mid-size sedan with WRX power and adult styling. It was the sleeper's sleeper, invisible in a corporate parking lot and genuinely quick on a back road. Later generations moved upmarket with bigger dimensions and softer suspension, chasing Camry buyers who never materialized. The turbo option disappeared. The boxer six appeared and then vanished. The Legacy became sensible, which was exactly what the market wanted and exactly what enthusiasts didn't. On Revnut, the Legacy ranks where Subaru's ambition and the market's reality collide.
