About the Legacy BL
Fourth-gen Legacy, and Subaru sharpened everything. The BL sedan got a stiffer chassis, better NVH, and the EJ20 turbo in GT spec making 276 hp. The naturally aspirated EJ25 was the volume seller at 168 hp, adequate but not exciting. What made the BL matter was the balance. The suspension tuning found a middle ground between comfort and sport that the BE hadn't quite nailed. Spec B trim got Bilstein dampers, a six-speed manual, and 18-inch wheels. That was the one. All-wheel drive as standard, boxer engine sitting low, and a driving position that put you in the car, not on top of it. The BL Legacy sold well in Japan and barely registered in the States.
