About the Outback BG
The first Outback wasn't really a separate model. It was a Legacy wagon with a lift kit, roof rails, and cladding that told you it could handle a dirt road. The BG got the EJ25 flat-four at 155 hp naturally aspirated, symmetrical AWD as standard, and 7.3 inches of clearance. Subaru marketed it as something between a wagon and an SUV and accidentally invented the segment that would keep them alive for the next three decades. The 2.5GT turbo made 250 hp in later models and was surprisingly quick for a wagon on stilts. Manual transmission available, cloth or leather, a no-nonsense interior that wore well. The BG Outback proved you could sell people on ground clearance without selling them a truck.
