About the Outback

The Outback is Subaru's best-selling model — a wagon that convinced America it was an SUV and built a lifestyle brand in the process. The Outback started in 1994 as a lifted Legacy wagon with roof rails and plastic body cladding. That was it. No ladder frame, no low-range transfer case, no pretense of being anything other than a station wagon with extra ground clearance. But the positioning was brilliant: more capable than a sedan, more efficient than an SUV, and perfectly calibrated for the REI parking lot. By the fourth generation, the Outback had grown into a genuine crossover with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, X-Mode terrain management, and enough space to sleep in the back — which owners absolutely do. Subaru marketed it to outdoor enthusiasts, dog owners, and Pacific Northwest residents, and all three groups bought it in bulk. The EyeSight safety system and standard AWD make it one of the safest vehicles in its class. On Revnut, the Outback ranks where capability and lifestyle intersect — and the community decides which generation struck the best balance.
